An at-home manicure can be a simple grooming ritual with a few clean tools and enough drying time. This guide covers regular nail polish. Gel systems have different product, curing and removal requirements, so their instructions should not be mixed into this routine.

Prepare your space and nails
Work on a protected surface with ventilation and good light. Keep polish and remover away from heat or flames, and out of children’s reach. Choose a remover appropriate to the polish and follow its directions instead of repeatedly scraping the nail.
Wash and dry your hands, then gently shape nails to a comfortable length with clean tools. Avoid cutting or aggressively pushing the cuticles; they help protect the nail area. Skip polish over painful, damaged or visibly inflamed skin.
Set out the products before starting. It is easier to work carefully when you are not searching through drawers with wet nails. Keep the number of products small until you know which finish and drying time suit your schedule.
Apply light, even layers
- Apply a compatible base coat if the polish system calls for one.
- Use thin color coats, allowing the drying time specified on the label.
- Keep polish off surrounding skin and clean mistakes gently.
- Finish with the recommended top coat and allow enough time before handling objects.
A UV lamp is not a substitute for the drying instructions on ordinary polish. Thick layers may look smooth at first but take longer to dry through. A slightly uneven first coat is easier to improve than a heavy, flooded application.
Care between manicures
Moisturize your hands and avoid peeling polish from the nail surface. Clean tools after use and do not share tools that have not been properly cleaned. Stop a product that causes irritation. Persistent pain, swelling, discharge or an unexplained nail change deserves professional assessment rather than another coat of polish.
