SEO Basics: A Practical Website Improvement Plan

Reviewed and updated 20 October 2026.

Search engine optimization helps people and search engines understand a website. Start with useful pages and a site that can be accessed reliably; no checklist can guarantee first-place rankings or indexing.

Give each page a clear purpose

Identify the question or task the page serves. Answer it directly, using language your audience understands. Add evidence, examples or practical details that make the page useful rather than repeating a keyword to reach a target density.

Keep titles descriptive and distinct. Use headings to organize the content, and write a concise description that accurately represents the page. Search engines may choose different wording for a search result.

Make the site easy to navigate

Link related pages with meaningful anchor text. Important content should be reachable through ordinary navigation, not available only after a search form or a complex interaction.

Use descriptive alt text for informative images and appropriate image dimensions. Compress large assets and check that the page remains readable on smaller screens.

Check the technical foundations

  • Confirm that important pages load successfully.
  • Review unintended indexing restrictions and canonical choices.
  • Maintain a useful sitemap where appropriate.
  • Keep old URLs stable or use suitable redirects when a move is necessary.
  • Check broken internal links and misleading page titles.

Measure useful outcomes

Search Console can help you understand discovery and search performance. Combine that information with relevant business outcomes, such as qualified enquiries or useful engagement, rather than focusing only on a plugin score.

Review pages when information changes or when users’ questions are not being answered. Adding more words, changing dates without meaningful updates or buying links does not create helpful content.
