Indeed for Employers: Plan a Clear Hiring Process

Reviewed and updated 20 October 2026.

Indeed can help employers publish vacancies and manage applications, but the quality of the hiring process still depends on the role definition, screening decisions and communication with candidates.

Prepare the role before opening the form

Write down the main responsibilities, essential skills, work location, schedule and compensation information you can provide. Separate requirements needed on day one from skills that can be learned after joining.

Use a recognizable job title. Explain the work directly rather than filling the description with vague claims about being a fast-paced family or seeking a rock star.

Check the current posting options

Indeed’s employer pages describe job-posting and sponsorship options, with terms and availability that may vary. Review the current conditions shown for your location and account before choosing a paid service or assuming a posting will be free.

Set a recruitment budget and decide who can approve spending. Do not treat an advertised feature as a guarantee of a particular number or quality of applicants.

Screen against relevant evidence

  • Use criteria linked to the actual responsibilities.
  • Ask comparable questions of candidates for the same role.
  • Keep notes that explain decisions clearly and respectfully.
  • Avoid collecting personal information that is unnecessary for hiring.
  • Review automated suggestions rather than accepting them as final decisions.

Give candidates a predictable process

Explain the likely stages and who will contact them. Keep interview requests clear, provide reasonable scheduling options and update applicants when the process changes.

Measure the outcomes that matter: suitable applicants, completed interviews, time spent and successful appointments. A large volume of applications is not useful if the role description attracts the wrong audience.

Close or update a vacancy when its status changes. Follow the employment and privacy requirements applicable to your organization and location.
