Relationships involve expectations, and not all expectations are unreasonable. Respect, honesty and consent are legitimate needs. The useful task is to distinguish those needs from assumptions the other person may never have heard.

Notice the unspoken rule
When you feel disappointed, ask what you expected and whether it was discussed. “They should know I need help” may be understandable, but it does not give the other person a clear request.
State the need specifically: “Could you handle dinner on Tuesday?” or “I would like a message if you will be late.” The other person can then respond honestly about what they can do.
Allow for different perspectives
People may express care differently, remember events differently or have different capacities during a difficult week. Ask questions before treating a difference as proof that they do not care.
Understanding a limitation does not mean you must accept every arrangement. You can recognize another person’s constraints and still decide that a need remains unmet.
Review your own response
- Identify what you can request rather than control.
- Decide which limits are important to maintain.
- Avoid expecting perfect agreement or constant availability.
- Accept support without making one person responsible for every emotional need.
- Revisit agreements when circumstances change.
Respond to repeated disappointment
Look at the pattern and discuss the effect of unmet commitments. A one-off mistake differs from a recurring refusal to engage with a reasonable concern.
If the relationship cannot meet an important need, consider what change or outside support would help. Lowering every expectation is not a healthy solution to disrespect.
This is general relationship guidance, not a claim that happiness is entirely under individual control. Health, finances, discrimination and other circumstances can affect well-being. Seek appropriate support when a problem is persistent, unsafe or beyond what a conversation can resolve.
